The Periodic table is a familiar figure to all of us who have studied science. The 7th Period (or row) has always seen some empty spaces. Why is this so? Also, all the elements found in the 7th period have weird names like Darmstadtium (Darmstadt is a city in Germany), Meitnerium, Roentgenium etc. All these names stand for the place of discovery, or the name of great scientists (Lise Meitner and Wilhelm Roentgen were great scientists).
Anyways, the elements found in the 7th row are all synthetic elements i.e they have been produced in a lab. They are extremely radioactive and decay in very small time periods. Now, elements with atomic number 113, 115, 117 and 118 have been artificially synthesized, thus completing the 7th period.
The IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) has announced that a Russian-US collaboration had enough evidence for the existence of 115, 117 and 118. The credit for the discovery of 113 goes to scientists at RIKEN in Wako, Japan.
