The Year at a Glance

2015 is about to end (very very soon!). So, I think this deserves a review! Bear in mind, the year in review is going to be in my perspective so there might be some bias on my behalf regarding certain matter.

Firstly, the year was devastating for the nation and for many of our people. Firstly, we had a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April. This powerful earthquake, along with its aftershocks, wreaked havoc on the lives of the people. Even now, thousands of people are still displaced from the Earthquake. After a period of first stage re-building and trying to get back to our normal lives, a new constitution
was implemented and during its making and even after its making, there were quite a few national strikes almost on a daily basis.

After that, there was the economic blockade on the Nepal-India border, which is still holding to this day. All of this has resulted in chaos throughout the country. There is a very limited supply of the essential petroleum products, there’s shortage of power, no water etc. etc. Everyone has felt adversity in some aspect of their lives due to all these factors that have opposed the development of our poor (economically) nation.

But, in this very time, we saw the good side of people as well. Arguably, the Constitution was a symbol of unity that could not have happened without the devastating earthquake (Yeah, that’s why I said arguably!). In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, we could see a lot of people helping each other and all of this increased the feeling of togetherness.

On a global scale, the year brought with it countless new acts of terror and violence. The ISIS attack on Paris killed about 150 people, the Syrian civil war resulted in many refugees trying to enter the European Union and many people are still killed in the Middle East. The world’s problems haven’t been solved.

The year was also significant in the discovery of exoplanets, as one of the first Earth-like planets was found within the habitable zone of a Sun-like star having a very similar period of revolution. A huge stride was taken in understanding the world around us when a well-known formula for pi was discovered in the formulas that describe the Hydrogen atom! There have been numerous other strides in Science this year which I have not mentioned in order to not make the article tedious.

And lastly, 2015 has been a revolutionary year for me personally. I visited Germany this year and learnt a lot about the German culture and also about people from different parts of the world. I also had my first experience of an international debate, which didn’t turn out so good. My academics have improved over the course of 2015 and I’m beginning to understand what I want with my life and what I’m good at, something unthinkable just last year.

With 2016 just around the corner, I think everyone needs to approach the new year with lots of optimism. With lots of hard work and a little bit of luck, even the most toughest of hurdles can be overcome! .
