Change

Ups and downs; shifts in a system away from an equilibrium state. Ups and downs are important; without change, there are no laws of physics, no dynamic existence nor the universe itself. However, ups and downs are detested by many people. Many people want consistency in their lives, they want “homeostasis”! However, it is my belief that change is needed, change is desirable, and without embracing change, no-one can ever fulfill their true potential.

Firstly, I want to elaborate some pretty strong statements in that introductory paragraph. How are there no laws of physics, nor a universe for that matter, without ups and downs? Consider a very simple situation. A second ago, the world around us was different in some way. Thus, change is an inherent part of the Universe. Scientific observations show that the Universe is expanding, which was first discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1929. This is a change of epic proportions. Moreover, one could imagine a universe where there is no change. However, such a universe would never produce intelligent beings capable of posing that question, simply because without change, there would be no increase in complexity.

Therefore, change is a fundamental part of the Universe around us. Living beings present in the Universe cannot violate the laws of physics and are bound by the same principles that bind the Universe. Thus, human beings and society in general are bound to change on a regular basis (being a part of the Universe!). Examples of some of the Ups of humanity include the lunar landings and the discovery of extraordinary phenomena such as the principles of Quantum mechanics. However, there have been downs as well. The world wars and battles taking place right now all over the world are some of the downs of humanity.

These fluctuations, these moments of ups and downs, also form an integral part of a human life. There are moments of success, as well as moments of disappointment. For example, JK Rowling, the world-renowned author of the Harry Potter series, faced many rejections from publishers before Bloomberg agreed to publish “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. The rest, as they say, is history.

Why is change desirable? Change is desirable, because it allows a person to develop and gain new, incredible insights. For instance, if one’s internet breaks down for days, it provides the person with an opportunity to do something other than spending time on the internet. This could allow the person to understand the benefits of not having the internet as a distraction (although, the internet is pretty darn useful!). Another example is the shift from school to college, which can cause challenges to people. There is a great deal of change involved in such an event. If the person can change, be more inclusive and open up his/her mind to the possibilities, this event could prove decisive in his/her life.

Let us consider the same situation again. However, this time, the person does not change. This could have catastrophic impacts. For example, in school, people do not usually study a lot. However, in college, a lot of study might be required. So, if the person does not change according to the times, he/she could find extreme difficulties. Thus, in order to climb to the top, human beings need to go with the flow and embrace change.

However, in certain situations, change may prove derogatory. Consider a person, who got acquainted with a drug addict, and became addicted himself. This event could have catastrophic impacts on the person’s life, in a bad way. Thus, there are situations in which change could be bad. However, with a little bit of awareness, a person can escape the strangles of “bad change” and embrace “good change”.

Thus, I would like to re-iterate,  change is desirable, and without embracing change, no one can reach their true potential. I might have already published some material about change (I do not remember, moreover I think I have a third-rate memory!). If so, there might be some differences in my opinion. However, that would be a result of the changes that have occurred over a considerable interval of time.
