Glad to have Internet back!

It’s been six days since I’ve had internet connection.. But, now, I can finally say that I’m back online! It’s kinda frightening seeing that I cannot go without internet for a week without feeling frustrated, off-the-beat, bored etc. etc. It’s a dangerous fixation these days; most of us can’t go without the internet for even short spans of time. Why is this so?

Everything in today’s world, from news, gossip, opinions to even “food deliveries” require an internet connection. Yeah, one could use a television for the news, telephones for the gossip, the food and other stuff, and also the newspapers! However, the internet is one of those convenient entities where one can do all of this! You can’t gossip on a television!! You can, though, to some extent exchange news on a telephone, but hey!, telephones are much more expensive than the internet! Besides, you can watch movies on the internet, do research and much more!

Also, it’s because of the internet that we’re able to share ideas and opinions much more quickly. Scientific discoveries take place at an unprecedented rate in the contemporary world, another plus point for technology and the internet. Let’s face it! Without the internet, we’re doomed.

However, the internet is a VERY RECENT manufacture of our civilization. Compared to how long we’ve been on the Earth, the internet was discovered just yesterday. However, it has been, arguably, one of the most important entities for the development of our civilization.

Nonetheless, the internet is NOT something we should revere. Yes, it has made our lives so much easier, it has helped speed up development and it’s the sole reason why I’m posting this article in the first place! But, consider this. What is development? Is it merely the betterment of our lives, or should it be holistic?

I believe that the true definition of development is a holistic advancement of the human civilization. What do I mean by holistic development? Advancement of not only our technological capabilities, but also our physical, mental, social, economical, behavioral and philosophical capabilities is really important! The internet only succeeds in some respects, not all of these. The internet actually deteriorates some of our abilities, as many of you might know. We’ve been less physically active than ever before in our lives. We have become obsessed with how others perceive us. We’ve become obsessed with technology and the “wondrous” lives it has brought us.

It’s time we look at technology and the internet as just parts of our lives. We need to realise we’ve become puppets to our own “superior creations”. And this starts with me. I hereby pledge to make only good use of technology from now on and in the future. Happy living your lives everyone!
