NASA is set to announce a huge finding in the atmosphere of Mars later today. Over the past year, NASA has done 2 such key announcements and this one is set to become the third one. The announcement is scheduled to take place at 2pm EST (Eastern Standard Time), which is 7pm GMT. It will be broadcast live on NASA TV.
The data is going to come from the MAVEN spacecraft (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN), which is currently in orbit around the red planet. In September, NASA announced the discovery of liquid water on the surface of Mars, arousing interest as to what today’s announcement is going to be all about.
Up till now, we know quite a lot about the Martian atmosphere. It is a hundred times thinner than Earth’s, which is a testament to the fact that the Solar wind has blown away quite a large amount of the Martian atmosphere since the conception of the Solar System. This is more acute, since Mars has no considerable magnetosphere.
The Martian atmosphere is made up of 95% Carbon Dioxide, 1.9% Argon, 1.9% Nitrogen, 0.146% Oxygen and some trace amounts of Carbon Monoxide. The Martian atmosphere is capable of starting huge dust storms that sometimes cover the entire planet!
