Rumors about Mars

Today at school, one of my good friends informed me about the sudden appearance of a large Mars in the sky in the days to come. Well, I knew this could not happen even if there was some miracle (I ain’t counting miracles of the epic type!). So, I proceeded to explain why this cannot happen and I want to share this, because I myself have seen such rumors flooding the pages of social media.

So, what is Mars? Maris is one of the nearest planetary neighbours to the Earth. It is half the size of our planet and is mostly red in color. Why is this planet red? Its red, because of the presence of Iron rust on its surface. Its about 70 million kilometers away from the Earth (smallest possible distance). Mars appears as a bright star in the night sky, red in color and visible for long periods.

So, is there any science behind this sudden increase in size? Not at all. Also, people are claiming that Mars is not properly visible at ALL, which is also a downright lie. Mars is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, sometimes, even outshining Jupiter! So, Mars has always been visible and shall always remain visible.

Mars is not visible in the night sky when it lies to the other side of the Sun as viewed from Earth. This makes it near the sun and would have been visible in daytime had it been bright enough. One more thing. According to these rumors, Mars will reach the size of the full moon, which isn’t possible unless one fixes an invisible telescope in the direction of Mars in such a way that everyone who’s on the Earth sees a magnified Mars (not possible!).

So, while Astronomy is this interesting and character building art, the rumors that float around which emphasize and imaginative beauty which is not possible greatly undermines its true nature.
