Hawking’s New Black Hole Insight

Black holes. A shudder goes down the spine of every person at the very thought of this thing. Its a thing whose gravity is so immense that not even light, the fastest thing in the universe (barring the quantum entanglement phenomena), can escape it. It emerges naturally from Einstein’s famous theory of General Relativity. Black holes are formed when supermassive stars (really super-massive; more than a hundred times more massive than the sun) collapse at the end of their lives. There is also strong observational evidence of Black Holes and there has also been a revolutionary insight which predicts that Super massive black holes are lurking in the centers of nearly all galaxies.

So, what happens if you fall into one? Well, you die. But, what happens apart from that? You change into spaghetti. The difference between the gravity at your feet and at your head is vast, because of the strength of the black holes gravity. So, there is more acceleration towards your feet, therefore you get elongated. Certain death right? What about your particles and the information that makes them? Shouldn’t they be destroyed along with you?

Not necessarily says world-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Instead, we might pop out in another universe all together! Strange, eh? Oh and one more thing. Black holes aren’t really that black. Look at the skies in X-rays and Gamma rays and they are one of the brightest objects in the sky. Also, they emit particles, well not exactly, but the particles appear to be coming from inside the event horizon, where as it is actually not. This is called the Hawking radiation.

Now, in a news report that was published recently, Dr. Hawking expects information to be saved from the wrath of the black hole, due to a very interesting law of Quantum Mechanics. It says that, no information can “disappear” without trace altogether. It has to be manifested in another place. So, either the information acts as a sort of a hologram at the edge of the black hole, or it will end up in another universe!

This is possible because of a phenomena called alternative histories, which is something if I try to explain, I shall only be guessing! However, Stephen Hawking further adds that if you were to end up in another universe, being sucked into the black hole might be the last sight of our beloved universe. All in all, Black Holes are the dreams of Singularities, Infinities, and just plain weirdness.
