We were coasting through another Social period, which happens to be one of my favorite classes. Suddenly, there was a small tremor, that jerked the place upwards for about a second. Most of the girls screamed. The chaotic scenes that ensued would have led to any outsider watching the scene from above concluding that the Earthquake topped at least the 5th magnitude. That was far from the truth.
People in Nepal have felt tragic losses due to the 7.8 Earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks. It is natural that people are afraid of the ground trembling beneath them; a tremble to doom and despair. Yet, it is time we accustomed ourselves to the uncertain footing we find beneath us. It is only a matter of time before another major seismic event hits the far-west of Nepal, or in our neighboring countries. An earthquake of such epic proportions would be widely felt even in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
The proximity of the Earthquake was another reason for the panic that ensued. Kalimati is basically a ten minute trip on the bus from where our school is situated; far too close for an Earthquake to strike. Well, the fact is, even the Valley on top of which we reside is scattered with fault lines, fault lines which have the capability of causing Earthquakes.
So, what do we do? It is well known that Earthquakes cannot be predicted; there can only be statistical modelling of the likelihood of seismic events. Yet, it is of utmost importance that we realize that Earthquakes are not necessarily the killers. It is we ourselves who endanger our lives. We construct mediocre buildings, flee during even slight trembles, forgetting everything. Such a state of chaos is not only a danger to ourselves, but to others as well.
Therefore, even though Earthquakes have the capability to cause widespread panic, it is more prudent to stay calm, and ride through the violent rumblings of the world beneath, without which, we could not even contemplate our very existence.
An Earthquake during school
Today, the 4.3 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that centered at Kalimati, one of the bazaars of Kathmandu, has caused immense panic. It was also the first earthquake that was felt during school hours; a remarkable feat, considering aftershocks have continued ever since the April 25th 7.8 magnitude quake.
