Goodbye Pluto!

New Horizons is driving on past Pluto at more than 14 km/s. It is now almost 14 million kilometers away from the dwarf planet. However, New Horizons mission is not done yet. It will continue to explore the Kuiper belt in the near future, and will join the Pioneer spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in leaving the Solar System and maneuvering through interstellar space.

New Horizons accomplished a remarkable feat in the past few weeks. It successfully flew past Pluto, one of the most unexplored bodies in our solar system. It returned stunning images of varying quality as well as some important scientific data regarding Pluto’s atmosphere, magnetosphere and everything else.

New Horizons has to send so much data, that it will take the spacecraft another year or more to send back all the data it collected during its close flyby of the dwarf planet. The data is being received in segments by the Deep Space Network and is being reconstructed into understandable information as we speak.

New Horizons represents the opportunity to design and implement more exotic missions to other places of importance, such as Europa and Titan, which could provide clues as to whether these mysterious moons of Jupiter and Saturn respectively, harbor life or not.
