Clyde Tombaugh was born on February 4th 1906 in Streater, Illinois. He is best known for discovering the dwarf planet (then considered planet) Pluto. He also discovered many asteroids.
He started building telescopes since the age of 20, and was granted a job by the Lowell observatory for his drawings of Jupiter and Mars. He worked there from 1929 till 1945. It was there that he discovered Pluto. He was given the job to perform a systematic search for a trans-Neptunian planet (called Planet X). The discovery was made on Tuesday, February 18, 1930.
Clyde Tombaugh is also known for his fascination with UFOs and his near earth-satellite search. He died on January 17, 1997. A small fragment of his body ashes is on board the New Horizons spacecraft, which is scheduled to make a history fly-by of the dwarf planet tomorrow!
