An interesting fact to note about the 30th of June this year is that an extra second has been added to the night! Think about it, an extra second of sleep for those lazybones (like me!) who wish to pack more sleep into their somewhat busy lifestyles. Admittedly, a second may not be good enough, but we might as well make full use of that extra second of sleep!
This extra second was added in order to sync atomic clocks with the rotation of the Earth, which is decreasing ever-so-slightly. In fact, during the reign of the dinosaurs, an Earth day was a mere 22 hours! This is due to the loss of rotational momentum and also partly due to the gravitational attraction of the other bodies in the solar system.
This is the 26th of such extra-seconds scheduled since the correction was first implemented in 1972.
